In early 2025, multiple AI labs and startups unveiled prototypes of multi-modal, action-taking agents. Tools like Manus AI (an AI agent capable of navigating the internet, writing code, and interacting with software interfaces… you should check it if you haven’t yet) are more than just large language models, they represent a new class of digital workers.

This agent-based paradigm builds on the logic of automation, but it doesn’t just optimise workflows, it replaces parts of them… entirely.

Such AI agents can help with planning and executing multistep workflows, accessing APIs, manipulating data, deploying code, and much more. In other words, now we’re not just teaching machines to think but empowering them to act.

But there’s a catch – the computing bottleneck. The widespread rollout of autonomous agents will not be limited by software anymore but by infrastructure. Every agent requires persistent, on-demand access to computational power (GPUs), ideally high-throughput environments with minimal latency and consistent power, and as you can figure, that’s an expensive demand! Cloud compute prices are rising, and the training and inference costs for new models are climbing beyond the reach of smaller teams and open-source developers. This is making the whole industry inaccessible and closed to enthusiasts or SMEs. In many ways, the computing process is becoming the new gatekeeper of AI innovation. We’ve democratised models, we’ve open-sourced code, but the machines needed to run them remain in the hands of a few.

At utilink.xyz , we saw this shift coming and that’s why we’re building a decentralised AI compute layer. This is a network where anyone can contribute unused computational resource and others can access it to train, fine-tune, or run their models. We are not creating a marketplace but a protocol-level rethink of AI infrastructure.

Our goals are to lower the barriers to entry for anyone building AI agents, break the monopoly on compute (currently held by tech giants), and enable a multi-tenant AI economy where creativity isn’t blocked by costs. In simple terms, imagine the following: instead of paying $20/hour on centralised clouds, you can pay a fraction of that to run an agent, powered by a global, decentralised network of GPUs.

Why it matters you ask? Well, autonomous AI agents are not just an engineering challenge, they are distribution challenge too. If only large corporations can afford to run agents at scale, we risk reinforcing the same power asymmetries that plague Web2.

To truly democratise AI, we must democratise the execution, not just the experimentation. That’s the space Utilink operates in. We are not just another startup trying to hop on the AI trend, but building (or at least trying to) the infrastructure for the next web wave, one where talent, ideas, and innovation are no longer limited by budget or backend access.
